Donald Trump is Leading a White American Death Cult

As I’m unpacking Tuesday’s election results, something really bizarre jumped out at me: somehow, some way, a greater share of white women voted for Donald Trump in 2020 than in 2016. That means women have had about five years to digest how he treats them in the same context as thinking of him as President of the United States and voted for him anyway.

He brags about sexual assault and implies it’s just gonna happen if you put a lot of people together, he calls women ugly and fat pigs, that they’re worse than men, and he almost certainly wants to have sex with his own daughter. 26 women have accused him of sexual misconduct since the 1970s. White women, on the whole, saw this and thought four more years would be a great triumph.

What am I missing here?

It doesn’t take much looking around to know that women are marginalized as part of everyday life, and many (if not most) have internalized this marginalization to the point where they think change isn’t possible. It’s part of the overarching social dynamic, and it’s going to take a lot to undo the constant waves of damage society does to women and even the men who actively or passively subjugate them. But it can help explain some of these election results.
